Walking on lead, or harness?
We put the question to our own motley crew and got a different response from everyone!
Billy has a harness as he’s tough for his age and would drag us along to say hello to everyone and everything if we let him, so a harness gives us a bit of a handle on keeping him close.
We have the opposite problem with Obe – he is a sniffer. He probably wouldn’t notice we were in the next field and we’re constantly giving him a little tug to get him moving! A harness was rubbing him up the wrong way, but a collar work just fine.
Resident ex-racer Charlie has, for the most part, had his fill of the fast lane and happily lopes along beside us. He slipped his little head out of a couple of collars before we settled on a slip lead, a simple loop of rope that only tightens when pulled, and is perfect for the gentle giant.
We’ve worked out what’s best for us and our boys, but let’s see what the experts have to say...
This bit’s important
If your dog has any kind of breathing or bone problem then a harness if definitely the way to go, that includes your Frenchies and your Pugs, as it reduces any strain on their throats. Harnesses can also help ensure the safety of smaller dogs like Chihuahuas and Dachshunds that might be more fragile than we think!
People and experts alike also argue that a harness gives greater control, depending on the size of your dog, and a padded harness on a skinny frame can be much more comfortable.
Collars on the other hand are a great training tool for young and old dogs alike as they tend to keep your dog closer to you for positive reinforcement (treatos!) Collars also have the added advantage of being lightweight, and no fuss when it’s time for walkies!
All-in-all it doesn’t seem like there is a one size fits all solution. There are better choices for different breeds, but in general a bit of trial and error seems to be the best way to ensure you and your canine friends have the happiest and healthiest walks.
